Flood Insurance
Little Ferry and much of Bergen County sit near the Hackensack River and the Meadowlands. Flooding can happen even outside high-risk zones.
What New Jersey residents should know
- Flood damage is excluded from standard homeowners and renters policies.
- Policies through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) generally have a 30-day waiting period before coverage begins.
- If you have a federally backed mortgage on a home in a high-risk flood zone, flood insurance is required.
- Since 2023, New Jersey sellers and landlords must disclose a property's known flood history and flood-zone status.
- Private flood insurance options may offer higher limits than the NFIP.
