Workers' Compensation
If you have employees, New Jersey requires Workers' Compensation — and for contractors it's usually the first thing a builder or customer asks for. Whether your crew frames, roofs, runs wire, lays pipe, installs HVAC, lays brick, hangs drywall, pours concrete, or excavates, we help you get covered at a rate that matches the work you actually do.
What New Jersey residents should know
- New Jersey requires nearly every employer with one or more employees — full-time, part-time, or seasonal — to carry Workers' Compensation coverage.
- Each trade is rated under its own class code, so framing, roofing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, masonry, drywall, concrete and excavation all price differently.
- Higher-hazard work such as roofing and excavation often needs extra underwriting information, and some carriers limit those trades.
- Sole owners and LLC members are not automatically included — an executive-officer endorsement adds them.
- General contractors usually require a certificate of insurance (COI) before your crew can step on a job site.
Common coverages
- • Medical treatment
- • Lost wages
- • Temporary & permanent disability
- • Vocational rehabilitation
- • Death benefits
- • Employers' liability
Craig's tip
Tell us every trade your crews perform — misclassified workers are the most common reason for a surprise audit bill.
